Choose The Right Handbag For You

Believe it or not, the type of handbag you choose has the power to make or break your look. And picking the right handbag has more to do with size and form than you think! If you’re planning to splurge on a new handbag real soon, bother with colours and prints later. First, read this guide on choosing a handbag that works with your body type and flatters your body shape.

YOUR PERFECT BAG

Think of scale; if you’re small and petite, an oversized bag will overwhelm your frame. Choose a small to medium size handbag that has a short or mid-length strap. Bags with longer straps will draw the eye down and make you look shorter. Note that wider bags will also make you look shorter. To make your torso appear elongated, go for bags that are vertically longer.

Stay away from boxy, structured bags that stand away from you, opting for slouchy ones that mould to the shape of your body. Bags that are too wide, too big, or too small won’t flatter your body. Bags with very short straps will make you look taller than you are; draw the eye down with a bag with a longer strap.

Again, proportion comes into play. If you’re plus-size, a small bag will only make you look larger than you are. However, don’t go for enormous bags that are round and slouchy as they will add bulk to your hips and thighs. Instead, go for medium-sized structured bags that lay flat against your body.

If you carry weight around the lower part of your body, avoid slouchy bags that fall on your hips. They will only draw attention to your hips and thighs, and add girth to your body. Go for structured bags that end well above your hips.

For apple-shaped women

If you are broader around your bust and waist, small handbags and those with short straps will work against your body shape. Create a balance with a slightly wide, structured bag that rests by your hips or lower to draw attention away from the bust.

For hourglass-shaped women

If you have balanced hips and shoulders with a well-defined waist, go for bags that sit near your natural waistline or below your hips. Choose from medium-sized hobo bags, totes, or crossbody bags, and you’re sure to accentuate your curves!

For rectangle-shaped women

If your shoulders, waist and hips are of the same size, you need a handbag that will help create the illusion of curves. Avoid bags that rest by or below your hips; bags that can be tucked under the arm or ones that rest by your natural waistline will flatter your body type.
