A Lesson In Self-Love: How To Celebrate Valentine’s Day Single
It’s that dreaded time of the year when all your friends are either dating, or scrounging through dating apps looking for people to date. Whether you are someone who is used to being perpetually single or you’ve recently had a breakup, we understand how difficult it can be to deal with the constant overload of couples-themed celebrations. Sure, we want to feel happy for our friends and being single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t really matter, but deep down, we know that it does affect us. Even if it’s not society telling us that we should be celebrating the day with someone we love, we do sometimes feel that unnecessary pressure to do things right. So here are a few ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single person:
1. Order All The Chocolates
One awesome thing about Valentine’s Day is that chocolates are always on discount. Many stores and supermarkets will want to get rid of their chocolates by the end of Valentine’s Day to avoid them going to waste. Many restaurants will also have special Valentine’s Day themed desserts and food that you can try.
2. Take Advantage Of Valentine’s Day Sales
Valentine’s Day is a great time to shop because there are tonnes of sales during this time. Whether you are in the market for some new clothes or for some lingerie, Valentine’s Day has got you covered. Don’t believe us? Just open your mails and check out how many offers you’ve received in your inbox already.
3. Send Virtual Valentines To Your Besties
Who says Valentine’s Day is just for romantic love? Just because you don’t have a partner this Valentine’s Day, doesn’t mean that you can’t express your love for the other people in your life. Maybe you can send out a letter or a gift card to your bestie who is in another state, or maybe you can make a handmade gift card for your favorite colleague at work! In the end, Valentine’s Day should be all about celebrating love, whether that is a relationship based on romantic or platonic love.
4. Video Call Or Spend Time With Your Loved Ones
If you’re feeling really low on V-Day, fret not. Always remember that your loved ones are just a video call/ phone call away. See if you can gather up a couple of your single friends and plan for a cute brunch date out. You can also invite your friends who are in long distance relationships along because they would probably be feeling super lonely themselves.
5. Do Something You Love
It’s often difficult to get the time to do some of our favorite things. You can use your Valentine’s Day to focus on doing things that make you happy. Whether that is, eating cookies, painting landscapes or throwing darts at a dart board, take time out on Valentine’s Day to do something that makes you feel extra special.
6. Give Your Mother/Father A Call
In the end, there is no greater love than the love that your parents have for you (unless you come from a toxic family, in which case, we get it). If you are on good terms with your parents, however, you should definitely consider giving them a call and just catching up with them. They will appreciate that you took time out to call and check in on them. In the end, when all else falls apart, you know that you can count on your parents for some comfort.
7. Treat Yourself To A Day Of Self-Care
We mean reaaally treat yourself. Go all out. If you had a date on Valentine’s Day, you’d be spending a lot of money anyway. So why not go all out and grab yourself that bath bomb you’ve always been interested in. Or maybe you can order from that fancy restaurant you’ve been meaning to try for a while. The possibilities are absolutely endless. Of course, self-care doesn’t necessarily have to be about lounging around. You can even go out for a jog or treat yourself to a solo trip to your favorite lake on the outside of town. All that should matter is that you have a great time in the company of yourself.
Remember that Valentine’s Day is just another day. If you truly don’t care to celebrate it, nobody is going to hold it against you. If going on social media on this day upsets you, just uninstall the apps for that day and focus on yourself. In the end, we have to remember that Valentine’s Day is all about capitalism and making profits off people who want to celebrate it. So don’t be too harsh on yourself for not having someone to celebrate it with. Do let us know if any of these tips were of use to you in the comment section below.
