Home Remedies For Dry Hand & Feet During Winters

It is quite common to suffer from dry, flaky and itchy skin in the winter months. This happens because the cold air robs the skin of its natural moisture.

If not taken care of in time, dry skin can invite bigger issues such as allergies, eczema, pruritus, etc. But instead of opting for over-the-counter medications, try these simple yet effective home remedies to restore your dry hands and feet to their healthy state.

Yoghurt mask

The lactic acid in yoghurt makes it a natural exfoliant. Rub unflavoured and unpasteurised yoghurt on your dry hands and feet to restore your skin’s natural moisture. For extra smooth and silky skin, add a teaspoon of raw honey into the yoghurt mix. Leave the mask on for at least 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Olive oil and sugar scrub

While olive oil is known for its moisturising and hydrating properties, sugar can help exfoliate dry skin. In a bowl, mix two tablespoons each of olive oil and sugar. Massage this scrub over the affected areas for a few minutes and then let it dry naturally. Wash it off with warm water and follow it up with a moisturiser. Do this twice or thrice daily.

Avocado and sugar scrub

The fats in avocados nourish and repair dry and damaged skin on your hands and feet. Mash half an avocado in a small bowl and keep aside. To this, add one tablespoon olive oil and half a cup of sugar. Massage this scrub on your hands and feet to exfoliate the dead skin cells. Then, apply a vitamin E-enriched moisturiser.

Aloe vera gel

The moisturising and soothing properties of aloe vera can help heal dry hands and feet. Apply freshly extracted aloe vera gel over the affected areas and leave it on for a few minutes. For an extra boost, add a few drops of vitamin E oil to the gel before applying it. Wash it off with warm water and then follow with some petroleum jelly.

Banana mask

Ripe bananas can help hydrate the skin. Mash an overripe banana and keep it aside. Next, add one tablespoon each of honey and olive oil, and mix well. Massage this onto your hands and feet in a circular motion for 5 to 7 minutes. Then, wash it off with lukewarm water. Follow with a moisturiser.

SOME OTHER USEFUL TIPS

  1. Before going to bed, apply foot cream or petroleum jelly. Cover your feet with socks.
  2. Avoid washing your hands and feet with harsh soaps and cleansers. Invest in mild, chemical-free and fragrance-free cleansers that are gentle on the skin. Stay away from sanitisers and wet wipes containing alcohol.
  3. It’s important to keep yourself hydrated from the inside for it to reflect on the outside. Drink enough water, at least eight to ten glasses through the day.
  4. Avoid taking frequent hot water showers. Instead, bathe with lukewarm water and once you pat dry yourself, apply some moisturiser over your damp skin. Doing this regularly can help hydrate your skin.
  5. Keep a hand cream in your handbag and use it through the day. It’s best to use creams or lotions that are enriched with vitamin B3.

Happy Winters 🙂
